Don’t laugh, because tomorrow you are going to cry

August 26, 2018

Don’t laugh, because tomorrow you are going to cry, said the boss to the workers. They were laying sprawled on the couch, euphoric, not even knowing the reason why they were laughing.

They stopped for a moment to mentally analyze the sentence. Don’t laugh, because tomorrow you are going to cry.

Sounds scary, huh? What is it supposed to mean? And who cares about what’s going to happen tomorrow anyway? The analysis didn’t last long. They were far too stoned to be shaken by that sentence. Tomorrow doesn’t really exist when you’re high.

Smoking weed is one of the best ways to take a step into the now and enjoy some glimpses of no-time.

There’s no past, there’s no future. There’s just this moment, your needs, your feelings, your now. No major worries about the future, about how you’re wasting your time smoking weed and getting dragged around on a leash by your own mind without you being the main actor.

“And remember…”, said the boss and then paused for a second that lasted an eternity. “Motorbike”.

He left them just like that. They watched him stumble to the car and drive away, sat back on the couch and started laughing again.

Sometimes people are funny. Sometimes people are stupid. People are strange.

Let’s go finish the joint, she said. I’m coming, she answered. They finished the joint and collapsed in bed.

A few hours of no-time passed. They were still happily sleeping when the boss came into the room and said: “I’ll tell you something but promise you won’t cry”. Oh shit. No one’s going to promise anything, here. It was 8:30 am and they definitely needed more sleep. We just woke up, don’t torture us with words. What’s the juice? “Someone passed away”, said the boss. “A dog?” she asked. “Your friend, Kana”. Silence. No one can sleep. How can you just go back to sleep when someone just told you that Kana is dead?

“Is there another weed provider in town?” she asked. The boss looked at her with contempt: “What the fuck is wrong with you?”. “Whaaat? I just woke up, I’m trying to think practical”. No answer was needed. “Was it an accident?” “No, heart attack”.

They wouldn’t cry for Kana, since he was just their weed dealer who usually wasn’t sorry about his late deliveries and lies. The boss used to call him “Con Kana”, cause he was a con. The weed wasn’t even that good, it had a stale smell, and used to affect them with carelessness and uncontrollable munchies. This is how dead Kana spent his last evening:

8:00-10:00 pm

Two long hours in the car, waiting for the delivery from Kuala Lumpur (might as well be one of Kana's lies, we will never know).

10:00-10:30 pm

No one knows what he’s been up to. In the meanwhile, at the guesthouse bets were made to guess at what time he would arrive. Kuchi didn’t want to bet, which is weird cause the previous day he had been betting around 100 RM on the World Cup. Kalay was keen to bet on Kana’s arrival within 45 minutes, but no one agreed. The delivery was already two days late, the workers were pissed off and kept on calling Kana and asking the boss when he would come, knowing that annoying them was the only way to actually get his ass there. Kana’s last message: I’m coming.

10:30 pm (approximately)

Surprisingly, Kana arrives. Time stops. People stop playing pool and doing anything else to witness the hero’s return. I wonder if someone has ever waited for Kana with such intensity and pain. Apparently he had 5 wives, none of whom shew up for the occasion of his death. No children. Two cute and fluffy puppies, whose brothers live at the guesthouse. Kana tells the workers that there’s a 50 RM discount. Not too grateful, they say thanks to him and quickly withdraw with two guests in the office to check out the product. Wonderful view on the jungle of the lush Cameron Highlands. The party begins. Magoo rolls a huge joint - a perfect work of art. They smoke and forget about everything else. They also forget to talk to Kana, so the last words they exchange with him are “Ok la, I go get the money. Are you gonna be around till the game ends?”. “Yes, yes”.

10:35 pm (approximately)

Kana is sitting at the Bamboo Bar with his friends: Krish, Kalay, Kuchi and Idontknowhisname to watch the game, drink and smoke cigarettes. One last night of fun with friends and Ballantines. He deserves it, despite all his lies he was a good man. He was a good con. He was only 44, but looked a lot younger, even though he had been challenging his body abusing alcohol and tobacco for years.

11:30-midnight

Kana is gone without having collected the money for the weed because the stoners were too high and forgot to get his 100 RM. This is the present he leaves us behind. France wins over Uruguay 2-0.

3:00 am

Kana goes to the bathroom,

3:15 am

Kana is still at the bathroom.

3:30 am

Kana dies of a heart attack.
